Meat alternatives are vegetable- and grain-based foods with a meat-like texture that can be used to
replace meat in many recipes. Examples of
meat alternatives are soy products,
such as tofu, tempeh, and textured vegetable protein (or “TVP”); wheat-based meat
alternatives include seitan or “wheat meat.” Meat alternatives are sometimes used
to make meat analogs, or foods that look and taste like specific types of meat products, such
as burgers, hot dogs, and cold cuts.
